What is blue light therapy?
Blue Light Therapy is a form of Light Therapy that uses waves of blue light to treat a number of skincare concerns. It’s a safe, non-invasive drug-free treatment that requires no topical products to conduct treatments, it is also considered a form of phototherapy.
Most famously known for treating acne, it can also be used to treat uneven skin texture and enlarged oil glands, as well as reducing the appearance of scars caused by acne.
Most effective for treating mild to moderate acne (Propionibacterium acne), it’s completely pain-free and can be used on the face, back and neck.
How does it work?
Blue Light Therapy works by the wavelength penetrating the skin, going into the sebaceous glands, where bacteria and oil cause acne.
The LED diode can work on any skin type and it targets the chemical in the bacteria which causes acne. Working below the surface of the skin to target bacteria, it essentially ‘tricks’ the bacteria into self-destructing, meaning you can use it both as a preventative measure or to catch the breakouts as soon as they come up.
LED Light Therapy devices are measured in nanometers (nM).
What devices use Blue Light Therapy?
A wide variety of devices feature Blue Light Therapy to treat acne, and for combined treatments, also include Red Light to target the inflammation of acne.
FOREO ESPADA is a small, pen-sized device that treats acne with a combination of Blue Light Therapy and T-sonic Pulsations. The pulsations drive the wavelength deeper into the skin to help improve results.
FOREO ESPADA wavelength is 415 nM (nanometre).
Perfect for treating active inflammatory acne, Quasar MD Clear Rayz for Acne combines Blue and Red Light Therapy in its device. Blue Light targets the acne-causing bacteria, whilst its Red Light on the reverse of the device helps to reduce inflammation from breakouts and minimise future breakouts.
Quasar MD Clear Rayz for Acne wavelengths are 660nM for Red Light and 415nM for Blue Light.
Quasar MD Blue Light Therapy Device is one of the strongest home-use Blue Light Therapy devices available. Designed to kill the acne-causing bacteria and prevent further breakouts, its large treatment head (1.94") to be able to target larger areas and reduce the time it takes to do a treatment. Its LEDs are 5mm.
Quasar MD Blue wavelength is 440 nM (nanometres).
Blue Light Therapy is a pain-free way to treat acne without using an invasive or medical treatment which may be harsh on the skin.
Until quite recently, LED was a treatment you could only get in a Dermatologist’s office or in a salon, which can be off putting - not forgetting expensive.
I’ve suffered from Acne since I was 15 and I’ve found Blue Light Therapy to be one of the only treatments that clears up my angry blemishes.
